You don't need to spend money to find a good workspace in Japan. Here are the best free options.

Libraries
Japanese public libraries are excellent free workspaces. Many have study rooms with desks, power outlets, and free Wi-Fi.
Tips for Using Libraries
- Arrive early — seats fill up quickly, especially on weekends
- Most libraries have quiet zones only (no calls, no talking)
- Opening hours are usually 9 AM to 8 PM on weekdays
- Some require a library card (free to obtain with a local address)
Cafés with Minimal Spending
While not technically free, many cafés in Japan let you stay for hours with a single drink purchase (¥300-500).
Café Etiquette
- Buy at least one item per 2 hours
- Don't spread out too much — space is limited
- Peak hours (11 AM - 2 PM) are not ideal for extended work sessions
- Look for cafés with "work OK" signs or power outlet symbols
Public Spaces
- Train station rest areas: Some major stations have free seating with power outlets
- Community centers: Offer free meeting rooms (reservation may be required)
- Department store rest areas: Hidden gem — quiet corners with seating on upper floors
When to Upgrade
Consider a paid coworking space when:
- You need reliable, fast Wi-Fi
- You take frequent video calls
- You need to work more than 4 hours straight
- You need a business address or mail service
